One of the annoying parts of hosting computer based karaoke is that the sound levels from different discs are all over the places. This is not a general case when using a DVD karaoke player, since you only need to adjust once per disc.

Does anyone know of a sound normalizer software that will limit the peak without taxing a lot of system resources? I tired a couple shareware pieces, but the post processing causes the sound/image to be out of sync.

I'm not aware of any good normalization software. What you can do though is encode your Vob to Mkv and also "check" to normalize the audio. This normalization is done once during the conversion process and not everytime you play that file.

There are other things you can do to avoid this audio level problem. What I typically do is:
1. On the hardware mixer, set the MASTER volumn, MUSIC volumn, and MIC level in a way that a typical new song would sound at its best.
2. On the PC, set the volumn at around 85%. This is where the remote control comes in handy and TKaraoke supports it. For low-volumn songs, you can crank up the volumn on the PC using the remote without having to adjust the MUSIC volumn on the hardware mixer which typically requires you to come up and turn it instead of controlling it remotely.
3. If the 15% volumn buffer zone is not enough for some low quality songs, come up and adjust the MUSIC level. The MUSIC level will not affect the volumn of the MIC so your voice is always at the right volumn doesn't matter how bad the song's music is.

If your collection are from Asia, PBN, etc., I don't see any audio issues with these discs.

With the DVD player though, songs from the same DVD might still have different volumn. This happens when the DVD maker "select" songs from different discs and put together without remixing the songs.

Thanks for the info.

That's true about the higher quality discs from Asia or PBN, the volume problem is mostly with discs from VN. I've been using the remote to adjust the volume, but it's a bit of a pain.

I'll post a follow up if I find any software that does it well.

Hey vcdz382,

Doesn't vlc have this feature in the effects audio section? could you just toggle this on or off and adjust amount? I turned this feature on but the output did not sound right to me, could be my settings. But this should do what this user want right?

The "volume normalizer" you see there is not what thematrixz talked about. That normalizer simply adjusts the the sound output amplitude if it exceed the amplitude sampled in N samples. What this effectively do is normalize the audio within the same file. What thematrixz want is to normalize the sound level across his collection of songs.

The next version of TKaraoke will support another layer of volume control. In additional to controlling the system's master volume, TKaraoke will also apply a software-based volume that can help with normalizing audios within the entire collection. This "software volume" is the same as the volume control you see in VLC. The user will still need to adjust the volume manually depending on the current song but TKaraoke can be controlled via the remote control instead of having to walk up to the karaoke mixer and crank up the volume there.
