Have you tried to set mkv encoding Bit Rate = vob Bit Rate?

@vcdz,
I have heard people in vietnzb encoded Chinese movies from DVD9 to mkv and they would not go back to watch DVD9 (vob quality) movies again.

Would you comment on the above statement please.
Should I try to use their encoding process just for curiosity?
I'm not planning to re-convert all vob songs again [lol]

MKV is good for movie & video music NOT for karaoke . Did u noted the letter crash some time . (that bother me ==>PERSONAL) not big deal[rolleyes]

Encoding from vob to mkv results --- using Core i7, 3.9 GHz, Win7-64, 6GB RAM

vob file size = 200 MB (probably ripped from DVD9), Bit Rate =5100 Kbps

TKT version 1.0.0.025
Intel MT: resolution = 1280x720, Video Bit Rate = 2550 Kbps, Audio Quality = Lossless, encoding time = 4:33, file size = 115 MB
Regular: resolution = 1280x720, Video Bit Rate = 2550 Kbps, Audio Quality = Lossless, encoding time = 4:36, file size = 115 MB

Intel MT: resolution = 640x368, Video Bit Rate = 2550 Kbps, Audio Quality = Lossless, encoding time = 1:52, file size = 115 MB
Regular: resolution = 640x368, Video Bit Rate = 2550 Kbps, Audio Quality = Lossless, encoding time = 1:51, file size = 115 MB

Observations:
1) Intel MT encoding video is a little bit better than regular encoding
2) 1280x720 video is close to vob quality maybe 90% as good as vob. If bit rate = 75% of original it would be very close.
3) Lower resolution (640x368) still OK on my 52" LCD 1080P TV. The lossless audio is my main objective for karaoke.

If you want the files uploaded for your own tests, just let me know

Ok, it looks like the regular version of TKT is good enough for everyone as it looks like the run-time CPU detection is doing a good job. The (Intel MT) version should only influence the speed - not the quality. If you consistently see the quality difference, let me know and I'll look into it.

When you go up 720p, 2550Kbps is a little low for this resolution. Try above 4000Kbps. This is where up-scaling might hurt itself - it has to have enough bits to keep good quality... It's like getting a wife and a mistress - you gotta have enough income to get by [cuoi]

I'll wait for more comments before issuing some conclusion on this. Thank you all for testing and posting your feedback.

Converting DVD9 vob to 720P mkv; keep original Bit Rate at 8000Kbps
Time = 16:59
File Size = 486 MB; Original vob size = 380 MB
[thumbup]
This is why they don't want to come back to DVD9.
You got to watch it on big screen (52" in my case) to appreciate mkv encoding.

You can see how smooth the edge of the letters on the screen. Actually super fine detail of the letters are very impressive.
When you play DVD vob you would notice the jagged edges of those karaoke letters.
[vo tay]
I am going to upload both vob and mkv files for you verify what I'm talking about.
Remember, this is not even 1080P ... It just 720P

This is vob file ripped from DVD9 ... several screens been jumpy

And this is the 720P mkv
... still uploading to megaupload, will be done in 30 minutes

Interesting... When comparing, be sure to use a progressive-scan capable player to play the Vob file to be fair. If you use TKaraoke to play, be sure Progressive Scan is set to "Linear".

Yes, progressive scan is always on.

Just played both files and here's my thoughts:
1. The MKV version has a few audio glitches at 00:00:30.5s, 00:00:33.5s, and some later spots.
2. The quality of the Vob seems a little better to my eyes.

Here is something that I used as a reference to make claim (2) above. The uncompressed version of the image is also attached.
UserPostedImage

This is just a single frame capture but I thought it's a fair claim at least for this still-image section of the video. Now, you can argue that the encoder doesn't do as much good as a job on still image frames than on normal frames and that might be true. Hence, this claim is only valid for low-motion frames. For other frames, it's difficult to make a concrete comparison like what I did here but my eyes are telling me that the Vob version is better.

Notes:
1. The de-interlace algorithm used for playing the above Vob is "Yadif 2x". The Vob still image above looks even better when Deinterlace is turned off. It looks a little worst when Deineterlace is set to Linear.
2. De-interlace is turned off for the MKV file. No video quality change is observed when it's set to any de-interlace algorithm. This is expected since TKT already de-interlace the video as part of the conversion from Vob to MKV.
3. TQT's MKV version looks very close to the Vob version. Not sure what the Encoding Options in TKT made that difference. You can compare the Encode Options using MediaInfo. I'll change TKT if other Encoding Options are better.

Updated with my conclusion and introduction to the "Lossless MKV to VOB" conversion feature of TKT.

Vcdz,
Here is what you request earlier: uploaded in NG
http://binsearch.info/?q...amp;adv_age=&server=

Bit Rate: 4100 Kbps
Time: 11:30
Resolution: 720P
Audio: Lossless
Size: 273MB
[thumbup]
You said that software up-convertion to HD is better than machine up-convertion. This is exactly what I saw on the TV.
[thumbup]
Connected to 52" HDTV via HDMI cable-- it looks much sharper than vob file. Again the lyrics show on the TV is a solid evident of what I am talking about.
:-({|=
If you watch it on your laptop or desktop, the vob looks just a bit better.

But we are using big screen TV for karaoke, aren't we? [flapper]
