Yamaha MG10XU

Last week, I discovered that Yamaha has released a new series of mixers. I was excited to see this mixer because it could be a step-up from the Yamaha MG82CX. So I ordered one (opened/refurbished unit for $150) and have been playing with it for the past 3 days.

This is the 3rd generation of the Yamaha MG series. This particular model is small and very easy to use.

How is it different from the MG82CX?
1) mostly metal body (versus plastic body of MG82CX)
2) XLR and 1/4" connectors are in one
3) Higher quality mic preamps taken from the bigger MPG series (Class A "D-PRE" preamps)
4) No inserts for mic channels
5) No RCA out for recording (you can only record via USB or 1/4" out connections)
6) Added USB 2.0 connection (24-bit/192khz) that is also compatible with iPAD (?)
-Unfortunately, USB connectivity requires windows 7 or newer (it didn't work with my Windows Vista).
7) Added SPX effects (with some fun effects like pitch change for vocal)
-Unfortunately, you can only use one effect at a time.
8) Added XLR main outs
9) Added 26dB Pad switch (The purpose of the pad is to reduce the level of a incoming signal which cannot be reduced at its source but that is too great for channel input.)
10) "Improved" 1-knob compressor: Threshold +22 dBu to -8 dBu; Ratio: 1:1 to 4:1; Output level: 0 dB to +7 dB; Attack time: 25 msec; Release time: 300ms

SOUND SAMPLE:
Mixer: Yamaha MG10XU
Mic: MXL V67M
Compression: knob @ 9 o'clock position (very little)
Effect: Hall Reverb 1

How does the MG10XU sound compared to the MG82CX?
-Unfortunately, I can't say for sure because I don't own the MG82CX anymore to do a head-to-head comparison. Honestly, I'm not too impressed with the new SPX effects. The mic preamp sounds cleaner and tighter but still lacks character. The compression works okay, but too much can kill the dynamics of your voice and also increases the risk of feedback.

How does it sound compared to the Allen & Heath ZED-10FX?
-I don't have the A&H on hand, but I will do one in the future. (Stay tuned) ___________.

My recommendation:
If you have to choose between an MG82CX and MG10XU, get the MG10XU. It's newer, it has USB connection, and it has somewhat better mic pre-amps. The reverb might not be top notch, but it's not completely horrible. The price isn't bad either.

I always like the MG_CX series . Very good for karaoke .
Now with the new MG_XU with all the improved hardware but cheaper price would be an excellent for karaoke . [hat kara]
I like the metal body much better than the plastic one since it's less prone to the RF interference .

Hello Experts

I'm planning to replace the MG82CX with this MG10XU. There is nothing wrong with my MG82CX. Looking at the MG10XU and Zed-10Fx, Zed-10FX does not have a compressor. Do I need it? What makes the 10FX better than the MG10XU?

Your response is greatly appreciated
